How We Met

The easy answer is that they met on E-harmony, but there’s more to the story than that. Katie’s E-harmony account had been expired for several months. Just before the Thanksgiving holidays, she saw a commercial advertising E-harmony’s Free Communication Weekend. “Hmm…,”she thought to herself. “If I add my email address to my profile page, then one of my matches might email me.” And she did precisely that. "Oh the cleverness of me, " she giggled, feeling like she was doing something extremely sneaky. Over the next few weeks she did indeed receive very nice emails, but nothing that made her want to respond.

Then on Christmas Eve, the clouds parted and the E-harmony angels gave Katie’s profile to Michael. "Merry Christmas!"  Seeing her smiling face kindled some sort of memory. He had seen this girl before. He checked his OK Cupid account and sure enough Katie had been sent to him as a match a few weeks earlier. Was this a hint from fate?  So he responded to her through E-harmony.  Then he noticed the email address hidden oh-so craftily amongst her profile.  He wanted a response as soon as possible, because this girl sounded too good to be true.  "Email might be faster," he told himself.  "It couldn't hurt to take a chance."  So he sat at his computer and composed this:
Hello,
I was sent you as a potential match recently on EHarmony and I was surprised because I also stumbled across you on OKCupid as well and while I requested communication through EHarmony a few days ago, I noticed you gave your email in your profile so I though what the heck and decided to write you in hopes to get a response sooner. My name is Michael (mdk1999 on OKCupid) and I was extremely excited and impressed after reading your profile as I feel we have tons in common. I went to school for graphic design and have alot of interest in it, although right now I'm not doing a whole lot with it. I work full-time for Nintendo as a retail rep here in St.Louis and part-time for my former full-time employer as a writer/designer for Figures.com, an action figure and collectible news website. I obviously like video games, and I actually own all the systems now (I'm excited because I just got a LCD tv for my room for Christmas!) and the next game I plan on getting is Bayonetta (it comes out on my B-day). I'm one of the most honest and loyal people you will meet, just ask anything and I'll tell you. Like you, this is the first time I've been single in a long time. I have been in two long-term relationships back-to-back, one of 5 years and one of 7 years. I love that you are in musical theatre, as I'm a big fan of musicals (Wicked and Phantom are my favorites). I love to dress up in costumes on Halloween, at movies, and at conventions. Speaking of conventions, I've started planning my trip to Orlando for Star Wars Celebration in August and I'm thinking about going to Anime St.Louis for the first time this year. Speaking of Anime, I LOVE it and my collection is starting to outgrow all other categories in my DVD collection. My biggest hobby aside from movies is my toy collection. I have collectibles of all kinds, from Anime characters, to movie figures to statues and expensive replicas. But Star Wars is the biggest part of my collection. Like you I'm more of an indoor person and a cheap date and am totally happy staying home if I'm spending time with someone that makes me happy or is fun to hang out with. It certainly beats spending time alone, which is what I've been doing alot of lately. Well I hope this finds you, that you had a great holiday, and that I hear from you soon.
Talk to you later,
Michael
When Katie read this squealed with joy!  This was a far cry from all the two sentenced emails or shady meetings that had graced her inbox all month.  She immediately went to OK Cupid to take a look at this guy.  "There had to be something wrong with him... was he like 400lb. or something?"  It made no sense to Katie why this guy was still single.  Then his picture popped up on her phone.  "HE"S SO GORGEOUS!!!  MOM!  Look how cute this guy is!?!"  Katie spent the next ten minutes dancing around the house, reading and re-reading Michael's email.

As soon as she caught her breath, she opened her mail app on her phone and responded:
Hi Michael!
Well this was a nice holiday surprise!  It's nice to meet you.  I totally agree, we have a LOT in common.  So much in fact, I think it would be just plain silly not to get to know each other.  (^_^)  Like you, I'm very honest, loyal, and pretty much an open book... actually I'm more like a old-school side scroller, where you have to do levels (1-3) and (1-4) before getting to the castle.  Unless you know where the hidden pipes are located and then you can pretty much play any level  you want.   (O_o)  Wow... that sounded so wrong and yet... is kind of accurate.  I think that's the first time I've used a gaming reference to explain the female psyche.  ANYWAY, what I'm trying to say is that if you ask me a question, I will answer honestly and the stuff you don't know to ask about will come out in it's own time.
Going on, this is my first go at being single.   I, too, had back-to-back-to-back relationships of 5 years, 6 years, and my shortest of 1 year.  Since then I've taken a year off and not dated anybody... which was nice in some ways, but I miss not having a partner in crime.  And though I enjoy going to karaoke, I'm not really a bar person.  Hence why I joined eharmony (I joined okcupid for the quizzes!).  (>_<")  OH!   This is something I usually don't tell people because they may not appreciate it, but I think it will give you a laugh.  My user name on OkCupid - Neska_Wamou - (which is my handle on most sites) is really my Jedi name.  See, I knew you'd like that!  (^_~)  I'm slightly jealous about your planned trip for the Star Wars celebration.  That's going to be incredibly fun!  Are you going in costume?  Oh I hope so!  When is the STL Anime convention?  I've never been and I think I need to change that.  Anywho, I wouldn't be opposed taking in a movie sometime, if you're interested.  I think we'd have a good time.  Besides, I'm not totally sure how my sense of humor comes across in email form.  It's not my preferred method of communication.  So I'd rather take the risk in actually meeting you, then let my somewhat awkward emails make the first impression.  What do you think?
Hope to hear from you soon,
Katie
And that was that.  Before the start of the New Year, Michael and Katie had made plans to have dinner at 54 Street Grill and go see a movie.  For Michael it was love at first sight.  And though Katie may have been too afraid to admit it at the time, it was for her as well.
